Evaluation

This has been a very challenging project for me and by far from which, I have learned and gained many skills. Learning the difference between an editorial and an advertisement image was the first key step in progressing ahead. Figuring this out, moving on to creating a mood board and storyboard for my word image and the brand image was something I really struggled with. This was because the inspirational word I got was cute and I could not figure out how to narrow my ideas and focus on fewer things. However, getting feedback from my tutor really helped. After working in my mood board and storyboard I finally got it and now it time to shoot my ideas.

I really enjoyed all the practical sessions as I learnt a lot. Setting up the studio lighting was always a mission for me. However, with all the practice I did I got better at it by the time it came to me shooting my final images. During the time I was photographing my final images I came across a few fumbles like the flash not going off, the flash bulb not working and the tethering cable not working properly. From all the technical sessions I had with Chris I figured out to solve some problems. I had to get some help from the supervisor to change the colorama as it was impossible for me to do.

Once I got the images I was happy with to be my final shots for the brand and inspirational word then came in the postproduction. Even though we briefly learnt about Photoshop during the first semester, I didn’t really know how to get around it. I knew nothing about it. I found Peter’s lessons really helpful. However, I still struggled editing the images, as all the techniques would not just sit in my brain. I kindly asked Peter for some more help and he provided me with videos that would help and that really did make a difference. Looking at the overall project, I found it quite challenging. However, I put in all my effort and I really enjoyed it as I gained new skills everyday.

Feedback From Sharon

Showing my tutor the image on the left that I edited previously I got some more feedback and things to work on. As I said in my previous blog post that I wasn't sure about having the product in the image as I thought it did not really make the model stand out and it all looked a little crowded. After speaking to my tutor, she also thought that I should drop the product and the image would look better without the product. Another thing to work on was smoothing the smile line on the right side of the model as this stands out, which its not meant to.

The image on the right shows the edited image in which I smoothed out the smile line on the right cheek of the model, using frequency separation in photoshop. I also dropped out the product and I think the overall image looks much better without the product and just the brand logo. I also smoothed out the cuticle on the nail visible at the top as this was really eye catching and did not look good at all. I was really pleased with the help and feedback I got from my tutor and I was really pleased with the finished outcome. However, I do need to work on my make-up application and improve this for the future.

Editing The Final 'Mac Advertisement Image'

Image With The Brand Logo & Product

The Image on the top left shows the final image that is a raw file and has not been edited. After showing the final brand images to my tutor, I was really pleased with the feedback I got as I found it really helpful. There were a few things I had to work on during post production. I was told to tidy up the eyebrows, as seen in the image the right eyebrow looks untidy and is just going everywhere. I was told to either change the background colour or the colour on the lips eyes and nails. This is because they all have the same shade of pink and it all just camouflages in. I also have to smooth the skin and work on the nails as I model smudged her nails.

From all the feedback I got from my tutor, I went on and worked on the image in postproduction. The image on the top left hand side shows the edited image. I changed the background colour to a baby pink colour as I thought this gives the mage a more cute look and it makes the model's face stand out more. I did this in camera raw by applying a mask to the bits of paper  around the model by changing the hue and saturation. I used frequency separation to smooth the skin overall and used the clone tool to get rid of any blemishes and uneven tones in the skin.

I also used the clone tool to smooth out the nails and the cuticle area, as they were quite messy. Using the lasso tool I drew around the eyebrow and selected the area that I wanted. I then copy pasted this, right clicked on the other brow that was messy and clicked transform and flip horizontal. This flipped the area of the left eyebrow that I selected over the right eyebrow. At first this looked a little weird as it looked like I just placed it on top. However, after blending it in with the original right brow the finished outcome does not look that bad.

The image at the bottom shows how it would look in indesign with the brand logo and the product. As the colour of the lipstick in the template was red, I had to change the colour of the lipstick to match the colour on the model's lips. I did this in photoshop by selecting only the reds tab while changing the hue and saturation to the colour that I wanted. However, looking at the image with the brand logo and the product it just didn't look right to me. During my next tutorial with my tutor, I wanted to ask her wether it was necessary to have the product in the brand image as I preferred it without the product.

Editing The 3 Final Images for The 'Cute Editorial Shoot'

                    Before                                                                                                                    After

Before                                                                                                                                        After

The images on the right hand side are the three final images that have been edited for my inspirational word cute. I was quite pleased with the postproduction of the images as they look quite better in terms of skin texture, looks and lighting. However, from the feedback I got from my tutor I think I could have gone in a bit more dramatic with the make up as the word is cute. I myself think that i could have done better in terms of make-up and will keep this in mind for any future opportunities that I get.

Final Favourite Images-Mac Brand Advertisement Shoot

Test Shoot- Mac Brand Advertisement Shoot

These are the test shoots I did before taking the final shots of my Mac rand images. I only used a large beauty dish as the solo lighting for this shoot and two black poly boards on either side of the camera as my model was at the back of the ripped paper. As seen in the images above I had to play around with the aperture and flash power until I was happy with the lighting effect I had for the images. I also played round with the ripped paper. I had  a large medium and small hole ripped in the paper as I wanted to see what different effects I would get. I preferred the images I took of the model peeping through a small hole in the paper and where the lighting looks muck brighter. I have these images in the blog post that says final favourite images- Mac shots.
